India to be testing ground for questionable genetic control of mosquitoes?

If approved by its regulators, India will become testing ground for a new but controversial technology that its US developers claim can wipe out malaria from the country.

Malaria is spread by female mosquitoes of genus Anopheles with several species capable of carrying the parasite. Using gene-editing technology, researchers at the University of California (UC) -- at its campuses in Irvine (UCI) and San Diego (UCSD) -- modified the Anopheles Stephensi mosquitoes to create a strain that resists infection by Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes malaria.

And employing what is called "Gene Drive", they showed that the gene which prevents malaria transmission in these genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes can be passed on to their offspring. This implies that, in several generations, the entire population of A.stephensi in the wild can potentially be replaced by one incapable of transmitting malaria.

But, will this silver bullet that works in laboratory, perform in the real world?

That is what the US team is planning to find out using malaria endemic India as the test-bed for their experiment under a generous $70 million (Rs 460 crore) grant from India's Tata Trusts.

This is the largest foreign investment ever received by UCSD and 50 per cent more than the annual budget (Rs 300 crore) of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) -- India's nodal agency for the control of all vector-borne diseases, not just malaria.

Suresh Subramani, professor of molecular biology at UCSD, says his team will work with a new Centre being created in India at the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (InStem) in Bengaluru. The collaboration, he says, "Represents a fantastic opportunity to train scientists of Indian origin in the new technology of 'active genetics' for the benefit of society."

According to UCSD spokesman Mario Aguilera, "Gene Drive technology has not yet been applied for vector control anywhere." Field trials in India, if allowed, will be the world's first.

Some scientists like P.K. Rajagopalan, former head of Vector Control Research Centre in Puduchery, says GM mosquito field releases should never be allowed.

"I am 88 and have spent all my life with mosquitoes in the field," Rajagopalan told this correspondent. "Mosquitoes had evolved by natural selection long before man. To think one can replace the natural population with another is a pipe dream."

Rajagopalan noted that Sri Lanka controlled malaria "by super-active surveillance and hard field work, making the environment inhospitable for mosquito breeding. Nowhere in the world has anyone controlled mosquitoes or vector borne diseases using GM releases."

R.S. Sharma and A.C. Dhariwal, two former NVBDCP directors, agreed. "Now everybody is pushing their agenda without knowing the biology of vector diseases in the field," Sharma said.

Dhariwal wondered "why the Tata Trust is pumping money into a California University and not into the Indian Council of Medical Research". The Trust's chief trustee, R. Venkataramanan, did not reply to request for a comment.

Govindarajan Padmanabhan a renowned biochemist at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, is an ardent proponent of GM crops but is wary about Gene Drives.

"There are issues of stability of the genetic elements over generations and also potential for resistance development to the spread," he told this correspondent, adding: "The environmental and ecological consequences are also being debated globally and I am not sure release of such engineered mosquitoes would ever become a reality in India, where even the Bt brinjal embargo has not been lifted."

But not everyone is opposed. L.S. Shashidara, biology professor at Indian Institute of Science Engineering and Research (IISER) in Pune, does not want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

"I am quite confident that this is a safe technology," he said. "Of course, it has to be proved beyond doubt. By not doing research itself, we may miss a great opportunity to help the society."

"This new approach is at a very early stage," admitted K. VijayRaghavan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, responsible for ensuring safety from the use of GM organisms. "Results from laboratory studies will determine how fruitful this approach is."

It is not the first time India is sought after as testing ground for release of GM mosquitoes. In 1975 a US-funded project that planned to release them at Sonepat in Haryana for control of dengue, was terminated by the then government on suspicion that the data collected from the experiment could have implications in biological warfare.

Since then, India has been wary about similar proposals under the banner of collaboration. Permission is pending for another proposal by the British firm Oxitec for release of GM mosquitoes for controlling dengue.

Resistance to the field trial of the anti-malarial GM mosquitoes by the UCSD team is likely be fierce because of the unpredictability of Gene Drives and the potential they hold for altering entire ecosystems.

And, a recent report in the journal "Nature Methods" said: "Gene-editing technology can introduce hundreds of unintended mutations into the genome."

Recognising these pitfalls, the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine said: "Gene Drive systems raise many questions with respect to their safety related to public and environmental health due to their intrinsic qualities of rapid spread and irreversibility."

The Convention on Biological Diversity has called for "a moratorium on development and release of genetically engineered gene drives".

Gene Drives are also considered controversial because their self-propagating nature makes them an ideal tool in the hands of would-be bioterrorists to spread disease-causing organisms.

While consensus is still to emerge, the US team indicated it will not push this untested technology on unwilling people. Asked when the Indian field trial with his GM mosquitoes for malaria control will start, UCI vector biologist Anthony James told this correspondent: "It will depend entirely on community acceptance and the regulatory requirements. I do not have a way to put a date on these."

Will Flipkart's own smartphone capture a billion hearts?

In India's fertile mobile landscape, dominated by Chinese manufacturers (along with South Korean giant Samsung at the top) an urge to obtain "signature" handsets has charmed buyers from diverse fields -- from telecom honchos to cricket moguls, from Bollywood heartthrobs to now e-commerce giants.

The scope is huge -- amid razor-thin profits -- with several smartphones now being launched across the price spectrum every quarter.

The truth is that not all will have profitable quarters and most won't survive, but then, it is a lucrative business and if things are set in motion from the word go, one may enter the top 10 slots in India in about one-two years of consistent growth.

Will Flipkart be successful with its somewhat mid-segment yet affordable device named "Billion Capture+"?

"The landscape today is dominated by Chinese-owned brands and it is high time that Indian design and engineering got a fair chance in this field. The Billion Capture+ is hence designed, engineered, manufactured and tested in India," Hrishikesh Thite, Category Head, Billion at Flipkart, told IANS.

"We arrived at the specifications of the Billion Capture+ after analysing millions of customer reviews on Flipkart. This launch should fill some critical gaps between customer aspirations and what is currently on offer in the market," Thite added.

The Flipkart device comes in two variants. The Rs 10,999 model will house 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage while the Rs 12,999 handset will come with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM.

"We have partnered with multiple designers, developers and manufacturers across the country who have all brought in their understanding of the Indian customer and their expertise -- in design or in engineering," Thite explained.

The device is being manufactured in Noida. Bengaluru-based Artificial Intelligence (AI)-startup Smartron has provided software engineering and design for the phone. According to Flipkart, the unlimited Cloud storage is provided through Smartron's India-based servers.

"More and more smartphone buyers are already buying their phones online given the large selection at their disposal. We plan to offer the phone exclusively on Flipkart," Thite noted.

Analysts, however, are divided on the future of the device.

"It will certainly be very interesting to see how this move by Flipkart pans out. Flipkart, of course, has advantages of long experience and data about consumer behaviour of online buyers," Navkendar Singh, Senior Research Manager at IDC India, told IANS.

Moreover, Singh added, Flipkart is getting into the $100-$200 (Rs 6,500-Rs 13,000) smartphone segment which, despite being hyper-competitive, constitutes almost half of the Indian market.

The Flipkart move should be seen from two viewpoints.

"Reducing dependency on partners (read smartphone brands) for getting more control over design and supply side of the device and for improved margins and earnings from smartphone sales," Singh said.

According to Tarun Pathak, Associate Director, Mobile Devices and Ecosystems, Counterpoint Research, being one of the fastest-growing smartphone markets globally, India continues to be an attractive destination for mobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other ecosystem players.

"However, in order to be successful, players need to target a diverse set of user base with their value-for-money and differentiated offerings. Just launching a device might not shake things at the ground level," Pathak told IANS, adding that Flipkart needs to do more than just place the device in the online channel.

The competitors in the mid-segment have grown over a period of years and now have deep expertise in hardware sourcing. More than that, they are better placed at spotting trends and are able to quickly align their portfolio accordingly.

"Flipkart needs a strong overall strategy, from hardware to bundling to execute," Pathak added.

According to Faisal Kawoosa, Principal Analyst, Telecom and ESDM, CyberMedia Research (CMR), Flipkart's strength is not in products but in facilitating their sales. "I don't see the device being a major disruptor," he told IANS.

It is pertinent to note that the market dynamics have changed a lot in the last few quarters.

The fight for customers' mind-space and retail-shelf space is increasingly getting difficult and expensive; China-based vendors are able to build brands across both online and offline channels and consumers are demanding the latest design and highest specifications at an affordable price.

"These can certainly present a few challenges for Flipkart as it starts its own smartphone business," Singh noted.

Thite, however, is upbeat.

"Given the large and diverse consumer base, there is space for a multitude of offerings from both e-tailers and manufacturers. We believe that different brands should continue to innovate and bring new offerings for the customer," Thite stressed.

"At the same time, we will also continue to look for need gaps specifically in the Indian market and put out 'Made for India' offerings," the Flipkart executive told IANS.

The dominance of Chinese smartphone players in the Indian market is not going to wither away any time soon, and Gionee India, with a customer base of 12.5 million and over six per cent market share, has ramped up its efforts to become one of the top five brands in the country.

With the launch of M7 Power in the mid-price segment at Rs 16,999, Gionee aims to further solidify its position in the competitive market.

The device is the first from Gionee that offers "FullView Display" and the unique 3D photo feature.

Let's see what the handset (4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory) has to offer.

The 3D photo feature of the aluminum-body M7 power stands out as one of the key highlights.

Go around an object to form a three-dimensional (3D) dynamic picture and the "live photo" feature shows the object with multiple angles with deeper detail. Turn the phone or slide screen to enjoy the 3D image.

Equipped with a 5,000mAh high-quality battery, the device is a delight for multi-taskers. The intelligent power management system efficiently controlled consumption as we took the device on with heavy usage.

The "FullView Display" complemented with Gorilla Glass 3 on the front makes the device look trendy.

With an 85 per cent higher screen-to-body ratio, the wider field of vision offers a better visual experience while watching videos, playing games or reading.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon Octa-core Processor offers a basic frequency of up to 1.4GHz. The 4GB RAM ensured glitch-free experience -- be it gaming or social media use.

Equipped with 13MP rear F2.0 camera and 8MP front camera, the device clicked some great snaps during daylight conditions.

The advanced software algorithms in the front shooter automatically blurred the background, making the selfies look beautiful.

When it comes to security, M7 Power offers "Private Space 2.0" feature, fingerprint security and app lock. Multi-function fingerprint identification can quickly unlock the phone in a safe way.

Embedded with Amigo 5.0 (Android 7.1 Nougat) operating system, the device has a unique WhatsApp clone feature that enables users to create three WhatsApp accounts.

The device also allows split-screen, making it possible to juggle various activities on one screen at the same time.

The device comes with the "intelligent eye protection" feature that cuts down blue light -- making it a good choice for those who prefer to read on their phones.

The phone has "Smart Gesture" feature where one can flip the device to pause the alarm while it rings.

The "black screen gesture" helps users directly access apps like camera, Internet browser, music, torch and selfie camera.

In the sleep screen mode, smart vibration feature alerts you if there were missed calls or messages.

The phone also has "Glove Patterns" feature that allows users to navigate through the device while wearing gloves especially during the winter season.

What doesn't work?

The camera can be better when it comes to low-light photography.

Conclusion: To sum up, the device with next-generation "FullView Display" and long-lasting battery is set to create a space in the crowded mid-segment -- especially against Moto G5s Plus, Nokia 6 and LG Q6 Plus -- for an upgraded user experience.

Smartphone apps may help reduce depression

Smartphone apps are an effective treatment option for depression, a finding which may pave the way for safe and accessible interventions for the millions of people with the mental disorder, researchers have confirmed.

The results showed that smartphones open up non-stigmatising and self-managing avenues of care for the people with depression because smartphones can help them monitor, understand and manage their own mental health.

"The majority of people in developed countries own smartphones, including younger people who are increasingly affected by depression," said lead author Joseph Firth, postdoctoral research fellow at Australia's National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM).

"Smartphone devices may ultimately be capable of providing instantly accessible and highly effective treatments for depression, reducing the societal and economic burden of this condition worldwide," Firth added.

Importantly, no difference was found in apps which apply principles of mindfulness compared to cognitive behavioural therapy or mood monitoring programmes.

Apps, which are used as an "integrative medicine" approach, can be particularly useful for improving mood and tackling symptoms in patients with a range of mental health symptoms and conditions including major depression, mild to moderate depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and insomnia, the researchers said in the paper published in the journal World Psychiatry.

"Given the multitude of apps available - many of them unregulated - it's critical that we now unlock which specific app attributes reap the greatest benefits, to help ensure that all apps available to people with depression are effective," emphasised co-author Jennifer Nicholas, doctoral student at the Black Dog Institute -- a Sydney based not-for profit organisation.

For the study, the team systematically reviewed 18 randomised controlled trials which examined a total of 22 different smartphones-delivered mental health interventions.

The studies involved more than 3,400 male and female participants between the ages of 18-59.

Zomato data breach sixth biggest in first half of 2017

The malicious outsider attack on food delivery app Zomato that exposed 17 million records was the sixth biggest data breach globally in the first half of 2017, a new report said on Thursday.

According to the "Breach Level Index" released by digital security firm Gemalto, a total of 203.7 million data records were compromised in 18 data breaches in India in the firsh half.

Compared to the last six months of 2016, the number of lost, stolen or compromised records increased by 167 million with 61 per cent of data breach incidents being identity theft.

The continuous attacks on Aadhaar data was another significant data breach related to financial access and identity theft in the country.

Globally, a large portion of the 1.9 billion stolen or compromised data records came from the 22 largest data breaches, each involving more than one million compromised records, the report said.

"IT consultant CGI and Oxford Economics recently issued a study, using data from the Breach Level Index and found that two-thirds of firms breached had their share price negatively impacted," said Jason Hart, Vice President and CTO, Data Protection, Gemalto, in a statement.

"Out of the 65 companies evaluated the breach cost shareholders over $52.40 billion," he added.

A total of 918 data breaches were recorded worldwide, in which more than 500 (59 per cent) had an unaccounted number of compromised data records.

The primary sources of data breaches included malicious outsiders, accounting for 74 per cent of the total -- an increase of 23 per cent from last six months of 2016.

While malicious insider attacks only made up 8 per cent of all breaches, the amount of records compromised was 20 million, up from 500,000 (4,114 per cent increase).

Google acquires HTC's Pixel team for $1.1bn

Ending months of speculations, Google on Thursday announced to acquire part of the Taiwan-based HTC Corporation's mobile division team for $1.1 billion.

Certain HTC employees - many of whom are working with Google to develop its Pixel smartphones - will join the US tech giant.

However, HTC will continue onward with its own smartphone business even after sending a good portion of its talent and operations over to Google.

Separately, Google will receive a non-exclusive license for HTC intellectual property (IP).

"HTC has been a longtime partner of Google and has created some of the most beautiful, premium devices on the market," said Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Hardware at Google, in a statement.

"We're excited and can't wait to welcome members of the HTC team who will be joining Google to fuel further innovation and future product development in consumer hardware."

The transaction was expected to close by early 2018.

This is the second time Google has acquired a smartphone manufacturer. It announced a $12.5 billion buyout of Motorola Mobility six years back and in 2014, sold it again to Lenovo.

HTC will continue to build the virtual reality ecosystem to grow its VIVE business, while investing in other next-generation technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), augmented reality and artificial intelligence (AI).

HTC will also continue to have best-in-class engineering talent, which is currently working on the next flagship phone, following the successful launch of the HTC U11 earlier this year.

Google will have access to HTC's IP to support the Pixel smartphone family.

Additionally, the agreement also represents a significant investment by Google in Taiwan as a key innovation and technology hub.

"Our unmatched smartphone value chain, including our IP portfolio, and world-class talent and system integration capabilities, have supported Google in bolstering the Android market," said Cher Wang, Chairwoman and CEO of HTC.

"This agreement is a brilliant next step in our longstanding partnership, enabling Google to supercharge their hardware business while ensuring continued innovation within our HTC smartphone and VIVE virtual reality businesses."

To become operational by April 2018, two new data centres are located in Mumbai and Bengaluru, the construction of which was initiated by Netmagic.

"India has been a key strategic market for us with the accelerating shift of IT services from traditional enterprise data centres into the Cloud-based services," said Tetsuya Shoji, President and CEO, NTT Communications, in July.

"With further expansion of data centre footprint and addition of international data network services to our service portfolio, we aim to meet the growing market needs for mobility, e-Commerce, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud and Big Data," Shoji added.

The data centres in Mumbai and Bengaluru will add nearly 500,000 square feet of gross floor space, accommodating 2,750 racks per 22MW power and 1,500 racks per 15MW power respectively.

Microsoft, Amazon team up to integrate Cortana, Alexa digital voice assistants

Microsoft and Amazon have reached an agreement under which Cortana users will be able to use Alexa, and vice-versa. The move will give the two firms a big advantage over the competition, which includes Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri digital voice assistants.

According to a report in the New York Times, the two rival tech firms have been coordinating behind the scenes for the past year to make artificial intelligent assistants Alexa and Cortana communicate with each other.

The partnership will allow people to summon Cortana using Alexa, and vice versa, by the end of the year.

In simpler words, someone using an Alexa device will have to say “Alexa, open Cortana” to get to talk to Microsoft’s digital assistant, and someone using Cortana will have to say “Cortana, open Alexa” to talk to Amazon’s.

According to the report, this cross-platform integration will also allow Alexa users to access some of the more unique aspects of Cortana. Microsoft has built its digital assistant directly into its office products and now Alexa will get that functionality via Cortana.

Amazon, Apple (with Siri), Microsoft and Google (with Assistant) are pouring huge amounts of money into making digital assistants smart.
While Amazon, Apple and Google have already launched smart speakers, Microsoft is preparing to launch a Cortana speaker with Harman Kardon and push its digital assistant into cars, thermostats and more devices.

After a partnership with Microsoft Indian-origin CEO Satya Nadella, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos also welcomed Apple and Google to offer similar integration saying he would support it.

“There are going to be multiple successful intelligent agents, each with access to different sets of data and with different specialized skill areas,” Bezos said.

“Together, their strengths will complement each other.”

Nadella also appears to welcome the idea of collaboration with Apple and Google, saying “Hopefully, they’ll be inspired by it”.

YouTube changes its logo for the first time

Google-owned YouTube has refreshed its iconic logo and introduced some major design changes to its desktop and mobile apps.

Unlike minor tweaks, this is the biggest change the YouTube logo has received over the years.

The logo ditches the red colour inside the "Tube" part of the name and places the now familiar play icon to the left side of the YouTube name, said a report in Android Authority on Wednesday.

Google says the change allows the YouTube logo to work better "across a variety of devices, even on smallest of screens".

According to reports, the service is also getting a new typeface, colour scheme and several major changes to the look, feel and functionality of its desktop and mobile app.

Earlier this year, YouTube had made a major change to its desktop website which delivered a cleaner interface and new features such as a "dark mode" for night-time viewing.

According to a new report, Google and Facebook rule the app ecosystem in the United States.

"Google-owned YouTube took the second spot overall with 71 per cent app audience penetration and Google's Search app took fourth place with 61 per cent," the report says.

Pages sharing fake news can't buy ads: Facebook

Taking ahead its battle against the spread of fake news and misinformation, Facebook has decided to stop Pages that share fake news regularly from buying any ads from the company.

According to a TechCrunch report on Monday, when a story is marked as disputed on the social media platform, the link can no longer be promoted through the platform's ads.

Facebook is already working in collaboration with fact-checkers like Snopes and the AP to detect news stories which are outright hoaxes and lies.

This is one of the many steps the social media giant has taken since last year after it was criticised for its role in helping to spread fake news which had an impact on the US presidential elections.

"Facebook has been trying to fight back in three ways -- ending the economic incentive to post false news stories, slowing the spread of those stories and helping people make more informed decisions when they see a false story," Rob Leathern, Facebook's Product Director, was quoted as saying.

According to Facebook, the ban on buying ads is not necessarily permanent.

"If a Page stops sharing false stories, it should eventually be able to buy ads again," the company said

Apple Watch to support 'all' workouts soon

The firmware of Apple's smart speaker HomePod and iOS 11 beta have shown several plans that the tech giant has for its customers with latest files revealing that the Apple Watch would soon support new workouts.

A website dedicated to Apple 'iHelp BR' has found assets hinting that the Apple Watch will support "virtually every workout under the Sun".

Files discovered in the latest iOS 11 beta release suggest Apple is planning to add a host of exercises to Apple Watch's Workout app with the launch of watchOS 4 which is expected in September.

iHelp BR found icons and titles for what appears to be a new set of Workout routines.

"While not present in the most recent watchOS 4 beta, the iconography is likely incorporated in iOS 11 for reviewing Apple Watch-tracked activities on a paired iPhone," the website said.

The publication found icons and code strings for badminton, barre, baseball, bowling, boxing climbing, core training, cricket, curling, dance, equestrian sports, fencing, fishing, flexibility, functional training, golf, gymnastics, jump rope, kickboxing, lacrosse, paddle sports, pilates, "play" sailing, skating, skiing and other snow sports, step training, strength training and surfing.

Earlier this month, HomePod firmware revealed 4K UHD, Dolby Vision support for Apple TV.

Earlier this month, a reference in HomePod firmware revealed that a next-generation Apple TV might come with the support for 4K video as well as High Dynamic Range (HDR) in both 10-bit and Dolby Vision formats for better picture quality.

The leak came a few weeks after Apple accidentally confirmed 4K and HDR plans on the iTunes Store.

Uber names new CEO

Ride-hailing app Uber has named American travel company Expedia's Dara Khosrowshahi as its new CEO after its founder and former chief executive Travis Kalanick resigned in June, the media reported.

The announcement was made on Sunday night, reports CNN.

According to Uber sources, Iranian-origin Khosrowshahi was not among those reported to have been in the running. The short list included Jeff Immelt, the former CEO of General Electric (GE) and Meg Whitman, the head of Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

However, Whitman said in June that she would not move to Uber and Immelt pulled out of the race earlier on Sunday because of problems with the San Francisco-based company's board, the sources said.

Khosrowshahi took the helm of Expedia when it spun out of InterActiveCorp's (IAC) IAC Travel division in 2005. He previously served as IAC Travel's CEO, as well as IAC's chief financial officer.

Uber has been without a chief financial officer since 2015, and the company's head of finance left the company at the end of May.

Expedia was one of the first tech companies to challenge President Trump's travel ban in court, citing the potential harm to its employees and customers.

As Uber's new CEO, Khosrowshahi will face a big job, including repairing the company's internal culture, navigating legal battles, and reducing its financial losses, CNN quoted the company sources as saying.

Last week, Uber said its sales reached $1.75 billion in the second quarter, up 17 per cent from the previous quarter.

The problems for Kalanick started earlier this year after a former Uber engineer alleged sexual harassment at the company, reports The New York Times.

Susan Fowler, a former site reliability engineer, levelled numerous allegations of sexism against her former superiors in a lengthy blog post. Her blog was widely shared online and prompted the company to launch an internal investigation.

This led to further allegations from other employees, prompting the company to conduct internal investigations.

Uber has already fired 20 employees -- including some in senior positions -- after evaluating more than 200 claims of sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying and unprofessional conduct.

Google may launch 2nd-gen Pixel phones in October

The launch of Googles second generation Pixel phones is nearing, however, the technology giant has not revealed the date so far. According to reports, the launch will be on October 5.

This date lines up with last year's announcement of the original Pixel handsets which took place on October 4, according to the famed and highly-accurate leakster, Evan Blass.

"Google's second-generation ‘Pixel' handsets, powered by Snapdragon 836 SoC's, will be unveiled on October 5," Blass tweeted.

"No official plans have been announced for the new handsets, but we did anticipate Google would take the wraps off of the new smartphones as well as some other devices later this fall," says a report in "9to5Google".

There have been rumours that the Pixel devices would sport a slimmer frame and better camera specifications this time.

Some rumours have also said that the Pixel devices could come with a "squeezable" feature, similar to HTC's flagship U11 smartphone.
