India gets short films channel

The Indian audience will now get to watch short movies on ShortsTV, which is in partnership with Tata Sky.

The channel was launched in India on Tuesday.

There was also a panel discussion, conducted by Carter Pilcher, CEO of Shorts International. Arun Unni, Chief Content, Officer of Tata Sky, Kristina Reed, a film producer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Indian actress Rasika Dugal and filmmaker Jon Bloom were also part of it.

Talking about the inception of the short film "Chutney", Rasika said: "The film's maker Tisca Chopra, who is also a well-known actress, and I were irritated that none of our films, mostly independent, got enough exposure and good releases because those films never got good distributors at the time of their release."

"So we decided to do something about it instead of cribbing over it. Tisca wrote the story of 'Chutney' and then we made the film and offered ourselves the kind of roles that we, women, deserve."

However, she added: "I did not get paid for it because here... that is the reality of short films when someone wants to make content that is different from mainstream. But it is great how the short got views and recognition, thanks to digital platforms."

Reed, producer of the Oscar-winning short animation film "Feast", said what's amazing about short films is that one can make it with fewer resources.

"But what is important to know because everyone can make films with fewer resources. It is important to choose the best one to put out on the bigger platform. It is great to see how Shorts International is calling and curating some of the phenomenal short films. They really separate out those gems from thousands of short films."

Bloom explained the selection process of short films at the Academy Awards.

He said: "The fact of the matter is, there are a lot of shorts made and of all of them match the level to be qualified to the international scale. We only choose the one that is exceptionally good.

"There are two ways to get eligible for the Oscar competition - one, the film has to win an award at a film festival that we (the Oscar committee) not only recognise but also recognise the category. Secondly, the film should have a minimum one-week theatrical run in Los Angeles."

"Let me tell you, none of the processes are simple because every festival is very competitive and at times, filmmakers pay money to run a film at the theatre to get qualified for the Oscar competition. It is tough, very tough because we are choosing the best," added the Governor of Short Films and Feature Animation Branch, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The discussion was followed by the screening of four short films - "Feast", Jackie Shroff-starrer Indian short "Shunyata", "The Eleven O'Clock" and "The Phone Call".

Google inks pact with Disney to run online ads

Google inks pact with Disney to run online ads

Google has said it will now power advertising for Disney's collection of brands and properties -- including Disney, ABC, ESPN, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars -- across multiple channels, including live streaming and direct-to-consumer content offerings.

As part of a global strategic relationship with Google, Disney will bring its entire global digital video and display business onto Google Ad Manager, which will serve as its core ad technology platform, Philipp Schindler, Chief Business Officer at Google, said in a blog post.

With the partnership, Disney will be able to serve video ads effortlessly on the web, in mobile apps, streaming through connected TVs and for live events, Schindler said.

"Together, we plan to build an advanced video experience for Disney that will transcend devices, platforms, and living rooms to bring the magic of premium video content into people's hearts, minds, and screens -- everywhere," he added.

Schindler said media companies are now reimagining the commercial break as TV is no longer a stationary box anchored to a corner in the living room.

While people now expect the same content they love in the living room on every screen, advertisers want to deliver quality ad experiences that are relevant, seamless and measurable across screens, he added.

Punjab SIT to question actor Akshay Kumar on Wednesday

A special investigation team (SIT) of the Punjab Police, which is investigating the incidents of sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib and the subsequent firing on protesters in 2015, is likely to question Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar here on Wednesday in connection with an alleged deal mediated by the actor between controversial godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The Punjab Police sources said that Kumar had moved a request that he be allowed to meet the SIT officials in Chandigarh instead of Amritsar, where he had been originally summoned.

Kumar will be questioned regarding his alleged role in brokering a deal between the controversial godman, who was later convicted of rape and sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment and Sukhbir Badal in Mumbai in 2015 just days before the release of a film of the godman.

Kumar has denied that he arranged any such meeting or had any role in brokering the deal.

On his part, Badal said on Tuesday that he had never met Akshay Kumar outside Punjab. "I have never met Akshay Kumar outside Punjab," Badal said.

Sukhbir Badal was questioned by the SIT here at the Punjab Police headquarters on Monday. He termed the questioning as a sham and alleged that the Congress government in Punjab led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was indulging in political vendetta.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was on November 16 questioned by the SIT headed by additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Pramod Kumar and Inspector General Kunwar Vijay Pratap.

The senior Badal said that he told the SIT that he had not ordered firing on Sikh protesters agitating against the sacrilege incidents in October 2015.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had said earlier that his government had no role in the summoning of the Badals and actor Akshay Kumar by the SIT.

The SIT was set up by the Amarinder government in September this year to probe cases of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and the firing ordered on those protesting against the sacrilege cases in October 2015 when the Akali Dal-BJP alliance government headed by Parkash Singh Badal was in power in the state.

Two persons were killed in the police firing in Behbal Kalan village near Kotkapura town in Faridkot district.

Don't play with India's economic sovereignty: Congress to Modi

The Congress on Tuesday accused the Narendra Modi government of playing with India's economic sovereignty by trying to demolish the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and seeking transfer of Rs 3.6 lakh crore or one-third of the central bank's reserves.

The Congress said if the "unprecedented" demand by the Modi government was allowed to materialise it would tantamount to the "great Indian bank robbery".

"Rs 36,00,00,00,00,000, that's how much the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) needs from the RBI to fix the mess his genius economic theories have created. Stand up to him Mr. Patel. Protect the nation," Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted ridiculing Modi's economic policies that have messed up the Indian economy, urging the RBI Governor Urjit Patel to resist the Centre's demand at all cost.

Later addressing the media, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said: "The RBI has been strongly resisting the unprecedented demand by the government. But if this demand were to fructify, this would tantamount to great Indian robbery."

Citing reports that the Modi government "may have invoked" section 7 of the RBI Act to get its wish fulfilled, Tewari said such a move was unprecedented and reflected the government's bid to demolish the central bank's autonomy.

"This is going to have a profound implication on the macroeconomic stability of India as it is the RBI's autonomy which provides confidence to foreign and Indian investors with regard to the stability of the Indian economy.

"The Modi government wants to demolish that confidence and demolish the RBI in the process," said the former Union Minister asserting that the Congress would strongly resist the government's move to demolish the RBI autonomy.

Tewari alleged that the Modi government was seeking the money to dole out freebies ahead of the 2019 general elections.

"The Modi government is prepared to play with the economic sovereignty of India and the reasons for it are the mounting fiscal and current account deficits.

"The government revenues are not growing because the economy has shrunk because of their policies. In order to bridge the fiscal deficit, the government has started eying the RBI reserve.

"What is even more disturbing is they want to use the money to give out freebies before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections," said Tewari accusing the Modi government of playing with India's national interest.

He said that the RBI was extremely concerned over attempts to curb its economy and "if the push comes to shove", then all options including legislative and judicial were open for it to safeguard the Indian economic sovereignty.

Women targeted by Sabarimala protesters

Sabarimala protesters on Tuesday raged, intimidated and sent back at least one woman from the age group of 10-50 years as they refused to break with tradition.

After the Lord Ayyappa temple opened on Monday at 5 p.m. for the special one-day session amid tight security, there were violent protests by devotees late in the night and early on Tuesday as they found out women from the hitherto banned age group approaching the shrine.

Two women on Tuesday were apprehended on their way through Pamba and threatened after devotees found out they were without the holy kit (Irumudi Kettu).

Shouting Ayyappa slogans the protesters stopped them from advancing any further. This was despite the fact that they were above 50 years, the police said.

It was not until their leaders announced on microphones that the protests ended. Later the women were helped to complete their darshan and perform puja at the hilltop temple.

The first protests were witnessed late on Monday, when a 30-year-old woman along with her husband and children was stopped. Following the violent outbursts, the woman retreated.

She was sent back home along with her family early on Tuesday under police security.

Although Kerala Police has literally taken over Sabarimala posting a dozen women officials over 50 years of age near the shrine, there has not been any woman devotee inside the sanctum sanctorum from the hitherto banned age group despite the Pinarayi Vijayan government promising to carry out the September 28 Supreme Court verdict.

The temple will shut its gates at 10 p.m.

According to figures more than 10,000 pilgrims had taken the pathway to the temple hilltop, compared with less than 1,000 devotees the same day last year.

The temple had witnessed massive protests between October 17 and 22, after it opened for the first time following the apex court's ruling allowing the hitherto banned age group of girls and women to enter the Lord Ayyappa shrine.

The temple town is witnessing one of its most stringent security arrangements. There were more than 2,300 police officials posted at various points up the pilgrimage path after the state took over the shrine's security on Saturday.

Several metal detectors have been kept at a various points and crowd combating arrangements are also in place.

The Kerala government has announced it would implement the apex court's ruling, pitting it against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and numerous Hindu groups which have been up in arms against the verdict.

Microsoft doesn't use customers' data for profit: Satya Nadella

In an apparent jibe against rivals Google and Facebook, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said the company doesn't use customers' personal data for profit unlike some other firms.

In an interview with The Times on Monday, Nadella said the company "had chosen not to squeeze the last drop of revenue from the troves of user data on its Bing search engine and the Linkedin social network, which it bought in 2016".

LinkedIn, which Microsoft bought for $26 billion, has over 560 million users and Bing is the number 3 search engine globally.

"We don't want to overmonetise. If anything, one of the things we've done is to is to make sure that the utility is maximised for the users," Nadella was quoted as saying.

Nadella's comments "draw a sharp divide between Microsoft and other large American technology companies, which have been criticised for abusing the personal information of their users".

At a Microsoft event in London last week, Nadella called on technology companies to defend users' privacy as human right, urging firms and governments to collectively work together to protect the most vulnerable section in society.

Nadella applauded the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as first step towards securing data privacy.

"All of us will have to think about the digital experiences we create to treat privacy as a human right," Nadella was quoted as saying.

"GDPR as a piece of legislation, a piece of regulation is a great start and we've done a lot of hard work to become compliant with GDPR."

Amid increasing data breaches, tech giants are busy deliberating on how to ensure privacy and security for the users.

"Customers must be in control of their data. It is our collective responsibility to keep the data safe," the Microsoft CEO had emphasised in May.

"We have the responsibility to ensure that the new-age technology is empowering everyone, creating equitable growth for all while creating employment on the global scale."

Delhi-NCR covered with smog, air quality beyond severe

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday experienced the first smog of the season with air pollutants going up many folds higher than the permissible limits and the air quality falling under the "severe-plus" or "emergency" category.

The sudden deterioration, as forecast last week, was due to a change in the wind direction, from easterly to the north-westerly, that has brought smoke arising from stubble burning, and Delhi's moist air trapping local and invading pollutants.

The air quality index of Delhi at 2 p.m. was 407.

"It was smog in the morning, the air quality has dropped overnight as the wind speed and direction have changed from the earlier easterly to north-westerly from Punjab and Haryana," said an official at the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The average volume of PM2.5 and PM10, or particles with diameter less than 2.5 and 10 microns, across 35 regions in Delhi was 368 and 507 microgrammes per cubic meters, which was 14 times higher than the limit.

The PM2.5 and PM10 across 47 regions of NCR was 359 and 498 units.

The permissible limit for PM2.5 and PM10 is 60 and 80 units by national standards and 25 and 50 units by international standards.

On the weekend, the air quality of Delhi and the neighbouring regions experienced easterly winds that cleaned up the air due to the western disturbance that caused snowfall and rains in northern regions.

Coal India eases fuel supply policy for small consumers

Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Monday said it has relaxed norms governing supply of the dry fuel to small consumers, a move that would increase availability of coal for customers who need less than one million tonnes a year.

The state-run monopoly eased the Mine-Specific Coal Supply policy, lowering the annual requirement of coal to 0.25 million tonnes for small consumers.

"This change would be a boon to consumers having smaller quantities of coal requirement," said an official of the company.

CIL took the decision considering the market dynamics, profile of consumers and mines, varying from subsidiary to subsidiary of Coal India.

"A need was felt for a flexible mechanism to enable coal companies explore willing consumers of all sectors with whom mine-specific coal supply arrangement can be made from existing and new mines," the official added.

The Mine-Specific Coal Supply policy was framed in 2011 to allow customers get assured supply from a preferred source and benefit from reduction in logistic costs.

However, the policy was applicable to consumers having a minimum requirement of one million tonnes per annum. Further, the mine from which the coal was to be sourced should have an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes.

With the relaxation in norms, the number of mines for participation in the policy has been expanded by lowering the eligibility criterion. Mines with an yearly output capacity of one million tonnes can now participate, as against 2.5 million tonnes earlier.

Moreover, the threshold levels of consumer requirement and production capacity of mines could be reduced even further by CIL's subsidiaries, if deemed appropriate.

Consumers can lift coal from the existing sidings of coal companies or opt for road-cum-rail mode of transportation of coal. The captive mode of transportation is environment-friendly and cost-effective. Hence, consumers shall be encouraged to develop such infrastructure under separate contract arrangements with the coal companies, the miner said.

The revised policy shall be implemented in a transparent manner where all linked/Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) consumers can participate for securing mine-specific allocation of coal.

Rahul says Modi looting farmers

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the Modi government of "looting farmers" in the name of its much touted crop insurance scheme, the "Pradhanmantri Bima Fasal Yojana".

br style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" />Taking cognisance of an IANS story in which journalist and farm activist P. Sainath asserted that the crop insurance scheme was a "bigger scam than even the Rafale scam", Gandhi on Twitter accused Modi of promoting crony capitalism.

"After looting the Air Force in Rafale, now the farmers are being looted in the name of crop insurance. The motive is one: fill thousands of crores of rupees in the accounts of suit-boot friends," he said in Hindi.

The Congress President has been attacking Modi and his government for corruption in the Rafale jets deal.

"The government's policies are anti-farmer. The Pradhanmantri Bima Fasal Yojana is a bigger racket than even the Rafale scam," Sainath said on Friday in Ahmedabad.

India completes n-triad; Modi cautions 'nuclear blackmailers'

With nuclear-capable submarine INS Arihant successfully completing its deterrence patrol, India on Monday completed its nuclear triad as it achieved nuclear strike capabilities in air, land and sea.

Congratulating the crew of Strategic Strike Nuclear Submarine (SSBN) INS Arihant, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India's new capability was a "fitting response to those who indulge in nuclear blackmail".

"Today is historic because it marks the completing of the successful establishment of the nuclear triad. India's nuclear triad will be an important pillar of global peace and stability," Modi tweeted.

br style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" /> " The success of INS Arihant enhances India's security needs. It is a major achievement for our entire nation. In an era such as this, a credible nuclear deterrence is the need of the hour.

He said INS Arihant will "contribute" to the atmosphere of peace in the region.

"India is a land of peace. Values of togetherness are enshrined in our culture. Peace is our strength, not our weakness. Our nuclear programme must be seen with regard to India's efforts to further world peace and stability," Modi said.

PM's development, job promises give way to temples, statues: Congress

Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram on Monday took a dig at the BJP for promising statues and temples ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, after failing to fulfil its earlier poll promises of development and jobs.

"At the beginning of five years, the promise is for development, jobs and money in every citizen's bank account," the Congress veteran tweeted.

"Nothing achieved, at the end of five years, the new promise is for grand temples, giant statues and doles," he said as he reminded Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his earlier promises of vikas (development), providing two crore jobs annually and bringing back black money stashed in foreign tax havens and filling up the poor man's coffer with Rs 15 lakh each.

Chidambaram's latest jibe at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party comes at a time when the saffron brigade has been raising the pitch for the construction of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya.

West Indies batsmen were reckless, Aggressive batting let us down

West Indies batsmen were reckless and paid the price for that by losing to India by five wickets in the T20 series opener here on Sunday, said debutant Fabian Allen.

Allen made 27 from 20 balls to take the total to 109/8 after chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav (3/13) and debutant Krunal Pandya (1/15) spun a web around the tourists, reducing them to 87/8 in 18 overs.

The 23-year-old said it was not the best of wickets and a score of 150 would have made the game competitive.

"It was not the best wicket but we had to be patient, should have played the ball on merit. We were too aggressive; I think we could have easily got 150 or 140, that was the target we were looking for," Allen said at the post-match news conference on Sunday.

"It's one of those days. We will look to come back in the next game. I hope we learn from this and take it to our next game," he said ahead of their second T20I in Lucknow Tuesday.

Asked if the team missed star all-rounder Andre Russell who, despite being named in the squad, pulled out of the series on the eve of the opening game due to injury, Allen said: "Of course, he is a crucial player in the team, a leader. Chris Gayle was also not around. Young players tried to contribute as much they can."

Allen said they would look to apply themselves better in the next outing.

"Anything is possible in T20 games. It does not matter how many wickets you lose... We could have executed efficiently. It was our first game, we will try to execute our plan and play the ball on merit," he expressed.

"In T20s, you have to expect anything. It was one of those days. We will just look to bounce back in the next game,"
